Getting Started on Our Homeschooling Adventure

We started homeschooling our 12 year old daughter August 2nd, 2021. To be honest, my husband and I had been contemplating this for a while. We started thinking about homeschooling long before the pandemic hit but it pushed us right over the edge. Thankfully having another baby allowed me to stay at home with our oldest daughter while she was remote for the first year of the pandemic. After her 6th grade year was over I had already quit my full-time job and we became a one income family.

I started doing research online and on facebook through a few of my friends who already homeschooled their children. I asked them what I needed to do to get started and what the requirements of our state (North Carolina) was. All of them gave me great resources to check into and a great place to start our journey.

I also learned a lot from watching the zooms my daughter had during her remote courses. I learned that the teachers had many different digital resources. I started taking mental notes about the websites and file sharing options they were using to teach my daughter through zoom classes. I knew I'd heard her mention some of the things before that she had used in school but I had an opportunity to see it put into action.

I've never been very tech savvy so we decided to start with textbook based curriculum. We visited a well known area book store over the summer that carries textbook curriculum and there were two very nice people to help me and explain to me what options would be best for my daughter. One lady there had homeschooled her children for over 20 years and another gentleman had been homeschooled, so both of these people were a great resource and had lots of knowledge about the types of curriculum we were looking through.

We were very excited to get started and are learning as we go. You can do it too if that is what is in your heart.
